This is one of five original oil paintings I'll be taking to the Fall Arts Festival in Jackson Hole. I'll be spending time in Mountain Trails Gallery chatting with folks and working on some new painting. It's always a fun time to be in Wyoming, so I'm really looking forward to the trip.

This small piece is a color experiment that in the end turned out to be a pretty decent painting. I'm constantly feeling the need to explore, experiment and work toward becoming a better painter. I feel like I made some progress this week :)

"Deadfall" Revisited

I've been kicking around the possibility of reworking some paintings I "finished" last year. As I heard Jim Coe say a few years ago, "A painting isn't really finished until it sells." True enough!
I felt this piece had a great foundation, but I missed the mark translating my vision into brush and paint. So... here's attempt #2.

I wanted to revisit this motif in a larger format. I painted a small study last year, but wanted to do something a little more involved. Worth the effort!
Below I've included an image of the study for comparison.

New Color

I've been experimenting with some new colors on my palette and have to say I'm pleased with the results. These whitetail paintings were fun studies and allowed me some freedom to push paint around and manipulate edges while maintaining good drawing. I learned a lot during both pieces. I'm excited about this new direction and the body of work that will result.
